PLASTIC SURGERY RESIDENCY

Integrated Residency Training Program

Our Mission:

The Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center / Harvard Medical School Integrated Plastic Surgery Residency is a 6-year training program.  Our mission is to provide the highest level of clinical care, to educate the next generation of plastic surgeons, and to advance science and innovation in plastic surgery. The residency program  is designed with these goals in mind to train broad based surgeons and future leaders in our field.

Eligibility:

The program is available to graduating medical students. There are two candidates selected through the NRMP match process every year.

Program Design:

The first two years of the program rotate through prerequisite surgery training including rotations on trauma, anesthesia, dermatology, breast surgery, transplant, vascular, ICU, colorectal, oculoplastic surgery, and pediatric surgery. In addition, there are 6 months of plastic surgery at BIDMC.

During PGY-3 to PGY-6 the residents rotate on plastic surgery rotations exclusively at BIDMC, Boston Children's Hospital, BID-Needham, and other affiliated sites. There are rotations in Hand and Extremity, Craniofacial, Breast Reconstruction, Pediatric, and Aesthetic Surgery. During the Chief Resident year, there is an Elective block as well.

Medical Student Rotations

Medical students who are interested in rotating at BIDMC should apply through the Harvard Medical School Exchange Clerkship program. Details can be found through the link below.

The Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center / Harvard Medical School Plastic Surgery Residency is a 3-year independent training program in plastic & reconstructive surgery.  Our mission is to provide the highest level of clinical care, to educate the next generation of plastic surgeons, and to advance science and innovation in plastic surgery. The residency program  is designed with these goals in mind to train broad based surgeons and future leaders in our field.

The program is available to residents who have completed a formal training program (and are board admissible or certified) in general surgery, otolaryngology, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, urology, or oral and maxillofacial surgery (the latter requiring 2 years of general surgery training in addition to a MD/DDS). Successful completion of these ACGME or ADA accredited programs fulfills the PREREQUISITE training requirement. Foreign Medical Graduates are ONLY eligible if they have completed the ACGME or ADA prerequisite. The program participates in the Independent Plastic Surgery Match administered by ACAPS. Applications are due in the fall 2 years prior to training. Interviews are typically held in April with the match process occurring in May.

Program Design:

Independent track residents rotate on plastic surgery rotations exclusively at BIDMC, Boston's Children's Hospital, BID-Needham, and other affiliated sites. Rotations:

Rotations during the residency program are focused on the core areas of plastic surgery. Major areas include breast, craniofacial, extremity, aesthetic, microsurgery, and general plastic surgery.

Rotations in aesthetic surgery also occur at off site surgery centers and private practices in the community. A 2-month clinical elective rotation is also included during the Chief Resident year.

Didactics:

Throughout the residency, there are weekly didactics that incorporate a Core Curriculum, Plastic Surgery Division Rounds, Surgical Indications, and Mortality and Morbidity Conferences. These conferences help prepare the resident for board certification, training in the high quality care of patients, life-long learning, as well as a building a successful plastic surgery practice in an academic or private practice setting.

In addition, a yearly Goldwyn Visiting Professor lectureship was established to provide further education from experts across the world.

Research:

The residency also emphasizes academic research in each of the three years of training. Research faculty mentors are assigned to residents. The program has a laboratory which is utilized for basic science research and to teach microsurgical skills and techniques. There is an expectation that all residents will participate in research, and learn the principles for successful publication. The Plastic Surgeon as a teacher of his/her colleagues, junior residents, medical students, other health care professionals, and the community-at-large is also emphasized throughout the residency program.

Medical students and observers are welcome to apply
