The Plastic Surgery residency training program was established in 1972 by Dr. Francis Wolfort at Cambridge Hospital and New England Deaconess Hospital and Robert Goldwyn at Beth Israel Hospital. Dr. Goldwyn was the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery for 25 years.
In 1996, the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center was created after the merger of the 2 hospitals.
Sumner Slavin, a national authority in breast cancer reconstruction and aesthetic surgery, served as the Chief of Plastic Surgery after this transition. The hand and microsurgery program was led by Joe Upton, a world renowned reconstructive surgeon.
In 2019, a merger was finalized including BIDMC, Lahey Hospital, New England Baptist, Mt. Auburn Hospital, and a total of 14 hospitals.
In this new health system, 75% of people living in Massachusetts are within 5 miles of one of the member hospitals.
