Plastic Surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center

The Plastic Surgery residency training program was established in 1972 by Dr. Francis Wolfort at Cambridge Hospital and New England Deaconess Hospital and Robert Goldwyn at Beth Israel Hospital. Dr. Goldwyn was the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery for 25 years.

Beth Israel and New England Deaconess merger

In 1996, the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center was created after the merger of the 2 hospitals.

Sumner Slavin, a national authority in breast cancer reconstruction and aesthetic surgery, served as the Chief of Plastic Surgery after this transition. The hand and microsurgery program was led by Joe Upton, a world renowned reconstructive surgeon.

Beth Israel Lahey Health

In 2019, a merger was finalized including BIDMC, Lahey Hospital, New England Baptist, Mt. Auburn Hospital, and a total of 14 hospitals.

In this new health system, 75% of people living in Massachusetts are within 5 miles of one of the member hospitals.

Harvard Teaching Hospital

Level I Trauma Center

With 673 licensed beds, the medical center provides a full range of outpatient and emergency services, including a Level I Trauma Center. BIDMC provides adult care with over 1,250 full-time medical staff managing more than a half-million outpatient visits each year.

Research

BIDMC is also home to a renowned academic research program where scientific discoveries are helping to transform medical care, ranking third in the country for National Institutes of Health funding among independent hospitals with over $230 million in research annually.

Official Hospital of the Boston Red Sox

Through a partnership with the Boston Red Sox, BIDMC is the official hospital of the Red Sox and Red Sox Nation.
